How to pay for therapy

Therapy with an out-of-network therapist can be affordable, even if you don’t have the ability to pay out of pocket. While I’m not in network with commercial insurance plans, your insurance plan may provide benefits that cover my services. Here are some ways you can pay for therapy

  • I accept direct payment using cash, a personal check, or credit/debit card.

  • I accept Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card and Health Savings Account (HSA) cards.

  • I also accept out-of-network benefits from insurance companies with which I’m not a participating provider, including United Healthcare/Oxford/Optum, Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, GHI, Beacon, Affinity, EmblemHealth, Kaiser Permanente, Humana, Centene, MVP, and many others. Many insurance plans provide some form of out-of-network benefit, which can often reimburse you for 80% or more of your session fees. If your insurance plan name ends in “PPO” or “POS,” you probably have out-of-network benefits.

  • I can sometimes offer single-case agreements, also called network gap exceptions, for clients who do not have out-of-network benefits (e.g HMO, EPO, and similar plans). A single-case agreement is when an insurance company agrees to cover an out-of-network provider at the in-network rate. This may cover all or part of my fee depending on the rate your insurance plan offers. If I’m able to offer you an SCA, I can bill your insurance directly and you will only be responsible for paying the remaining balance. Please note on the appointment request form if you require an SCA.

  • I am a New York state worker’s compensation approved provider.

Using your out-of-network benefits

Seeing an out-of-network provider is different than seeing an in-network provider, but getting reimbursed by your insurance is usually a simple process. When you use your out-of-network benefits, you pay the full session fee at the time of the session. I can usually send the bill to your insurance company electronically—so no forms to fill out!. After your claim is processed, your insurance company will send you your reimbursement, typically by mail in 2-4 weeks.

If your unsure what your benefits cover, I’d be glad to get in touch with your insurance plan and provide you with a cost estimate—just contact me using the appointment request form below.

Session fees

The amounts below are practice director Andrew Triska’s session fees. Every therapist at this practice sets their own fees and may charge different amounts for different services. See the staff page for staff therapists’ session fees.

Individual session (50 minutes) $289
Couples'/family session (50 minutes) $315
Parent coaching session (50 minutes) $289

Estimate your costs

This calculator only estimates your insurance reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits. It does not tell you what you might be reimbursed with a single-case agreement if you choose to request one. If your plan does not offer out-of-network benefits, your reimbursement will be estimated at $0. Also, please note that the standard session length at my practice is 50 minutes (the calculator says “45 minutes” because of the way therapy sessions of that length are coded for insurance purposes).
